Debra Bogaards was the go to trial attorney for Israel and Rene Morales who lost their beloved daughter, Jessica Morales, then age 20, in the PG&E pipeline explosion in San Bruno.
While the high profile firms bid for this wrongful death case, ultimately Israel and Rene Morales chose Debra Bogaards, who also brought in co-counsel John Feder, due to her sensitivity as a mother and empathy for Jessica’s mother. Ms. Bogaards helped put together a team of experts and supervised the making of a professional quality video about the explosion and Jessica Morale’s life to show PG&E’s lawyers at mediation. Ms. Bogaards selected some friends, teachers and family members to be interviewed by the award winning film producers in the Morales’ home, and portions of the interviews were used in the video. The Morales’ proceeded to an early mediation before two retired justices with Ms. Bogaards, and received a confidential settlement.
Ms. Bogaards followed the criminal trial of PG&E about 5 years later, and remains in contact with Rene Morales to this day. Kim Archie is producing a documentary film about the PG&E pipeline explosion and interviewed Ms. Bogaards as part of the film.
Victims of the Napa and Santa Rosa fires of October 2017 have contacted Ms. Bogaards about representation. Many people lost their homes and Ms. Bogaards has stepped in to help them.
